Very old US variety. Red fruit of 150 to 300 grams, strongly grooved/ribbed and flattened.

A heirloom and historical variety dating from the 1830s, the most widely grown variety in the USA before the Civil War. Listed in 1843 in the "Shaker" seed catalogue.

Synonyms: Shaker's large red.

Red fruit weighing 150-300 grams and 10-12 cm in diameter, strongly grooved/ribbed and flattened, sometimes with rounded or even curved shoulders for larger sizes.

Flesh with half-hollow cavities, ideal for making stuffing. Complex flavour, rich, sweet but also slightly acidic.

Good production in the second half of the season.
