JALTOMATE
Mexican origin. Round dark purple to black berries, 1 cm in diameter. Sweet taste halfway between tomato and grape.
Atypical variety, belonging to the same family as tomatoes: Solanaceae. Native to Mexico and very present in the Oaxaca region. It is a very fast growing plant that produces, from June onwards, numerous round dark purple to black berries of 1 cm in diameter.
Synonyms: Jaltomate - Jalmota procumbens - Blackberry bush - Creeping false holly.
Mild flavour halfway between tomato and grape. These berries can be used raw, cooked (jam) or candied.
A very large plant that can grow to over 4 m, more tolerant of cold than a classic tomato plant, it can withstand light frosts.
